
Band Director: Kevin Massey
Mr. Massey is currently in his sixth year at
North High School. He is
the director of the marching band, Jazz I, and
varsity concert band. He
also teaches individual lessons and jazz
improvisation class. Massey
graduated from North High School in 1991, where
he studied under
North’s legendary band director, Larry Kisor. He
graduated from the
University of South Dakota with his bachelor’s
degree in music
education and master’s degree in music
performance. Kevin taught 5th
and 9-12th instrumental music in the
Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn school
district for two years, and his jazz band won
the 2000 class 1A Iowa
Jazz Championships. Massey then taught five
years at Bishop Heelan
Catholic High School before moving to his alma
mater. Massey’s
performance experience includes: The Sioux City
Jazz Orchestra, Sioux
City Municipal Band, Impressions Jazz Quintet,
Guntren Jazz Quintet,
Sioux City Rockestra, Whiskey Creek Brass,
LeMars Municipal Band, Tri
State Brass, Jubilation, Mearl Lake Orchestra,
The Living Christmas
Tree Orchestra, The Okoboji Gong Show Orchestra,
The Prairie Cats, and
the North West Iowa Big Band. Kevin and his wife
Christine, who is also
a music teacher, have three children: Joshua,
Jacob, and Julianna.
Assistant Band Director: Mark Henderson
Mark
Henderson
is
a 1998 North High graduate who is finally came
home after
ten years. He teaches freshman concert band and
Jazz Too. As a student
at North High School, Mr. Henderson experienced
band with Larry Kisor,
Brad Mitchell, and Kevin Linder. While at North
High, his
accomplishments include being a two year
all-state member on french
horn, a four year member of the Northwest Iowa
Honor band on french
horn, an all-state jazz band member his senior
year on trombone, and a
three year member of Jazz Band One on trombone.
Mr. Henderson received
his B.M.E. from the University of Northern Iowa
where he attended with
individual french horn and jazz trombone
scholarships. While going
through UNI, Mr. Henderson fulfilled his student
teaching requirement
at Kentridge High School in Kent, WA just
outside of Seattle. His first
full-time teaching job was in the
Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn School
District as a middle school director for two
years. He then spent one
year as the head director at Lewis Central High
School in Council
Bluffs, IA and then returned to Sioux City where
he was a substitute
teacher for two years. Mr. Henderson regularly
performs in Sioux City
Rockestra, the Siouxland All-America Band, the
Sioux City Municipal
Band, the Sioux City Jazz Orchestra, and other
various ensembles around
Sioux City. Many people also know Mr. Henderson
as an avid rock
climber, and in his leisure time he often times
can be found downtown
climbing the indoor rock wall in the old
auditorium.
