MARCHING
North High School has a
strong tradition of excellence in marching band over the past twenty
years. The “North High Marching Stars” have earned awards and division
“1” ratings at numerous events in the tri-state area. 2009 multiple
honors have come to the Marching Stars.
After winning first place at the Algona Days Festival Parade, the band
won the Grand Champion Sweepstakes Trophy at the Waukee Invitational
and was honored for its outstanding color guard and drum majors.
The Marching Band also received 5th place at the Dutchmen Field
Championships and 2nd place at the University of South Dakota Quad
State Festival.
In addition to contests, the band performed at Starfest, several home
football games, an indoor marching concert, and an assembly for the
student body.
Students enjoyed performing their creative show entitled "Out of
Africa", which included the selections entitled Stampede, African Morning, Africa, and
The Wild.
Band camp is the beginning of serious preparation for the marching
season. Before school begins, one week of intensive rehearsals are
scheduled to learn the drill for the season. Band camp is conducted
during the day on the North High marching field. Dates for band camp
will be available well in advance of the beginning to accommodate
family and work schedules.
This ensemble rehearses five times a week during the
football/competition season. Rehearsal begins on the North High
marching field at 6:40 AM and concludes at the end of first period. All
students are expected to be on time. Students are expected to be
present even if it is raining or snowing out. If school is scheduled,
the band will practice. If the weather is poor practice will be
conducted in the band room.
Football performances happen at Elwood Olsen stadium, both before the
game and during halftime. Competitions are scheduled for Saturdays
throughout the fall. See the band calendar for specific dates and times.
The marching band is under the direction of Kevin Massey, Mark
Henderson, and April Netley.
