North High School has a new band director! Lucas Sursely from Madison, South Dakota. He will be in town Wednesday, May 22nd. He will be visiting both the high school and the middle school to meet the kids. We will have more information out to you in the next week or so.
Lucas Sursely grew up in Rochester, Minnesota. He joined band his sophomore year at Rochester John Marshall. In high school he studied with his band director Brad Mitchell and privately with Scott Olaff. In 2000 Mr. Sursely enrolled at South Dakota State University where he studied percussion under Mr. James Mckinney and Mr. Steve Tobin. While at SDSU, Mr. Sursely participated in concert band, marching band and percussion ensemble. Additionally, he was a member of “SuFuDu” and Minnesota Brass Drum and Bugle Corps. He was also an assistant staff member at Roosevelt High School under the direction of Mr. Shane Macklin. His responsibilities included overseeing the marching percussion section and running percussion ensembles during the winter months. Mr. Sursely’s first full time band position was at Martin County West Schools in Sherburn, MN. In the fall of 2007, Mr. Sursely took over the Madison band program. He is honored to have conduct the Spirit of Madison marching band, concert band, jazz band and winter drumline. In addition, he conducted three middle school concert bands and a unique general music class that combines bucket drumming with outrageous skits.
